Cold Laser Therapy

Greenfield Veterinary Clinic Offers Cold Laser Therapy

Cold laser therapy is a technology that veterinarians use to help with healing and pain management. The technology can be particularly helpful for pets that do not tolerate pain medications well or have wounds that require extra care. At Greenfield Veterinary Clinic in Greenfield, WI, we offer cold laser therapy to help our patients heal faster and be more comfortable.

.

What Is Cold Laser Therapy?

Most people are familiar with lasers as a powerful beam of light used as medical instruments, for making precise, clean cuts that heal more easily. At lower frequencies, lasers can also be used to stimulate certain biological processes deep within the layers of tissue with a process called photobiomodulation. This tool allows natural healing chemicals to be released deep within the tissues for faster healing.

Conditions Cold Laser Therapy Can Help

Cold laser therapy can be helpful for older animals that experience pain and stiffness due to osteoarthritis. The technology can also help heal ligament strains and tears that occur with active animals. Our veterinarians may recommend cold laser therapy after surgery to encourage wound healing. Cold laser therapy can also be used to aid healing and pain relief after spinal surgery. In some cases, cold laser therapy is also used to facilitate healing in stubborn skin infections.

What Happens During A Cold Laser Therapy Session?

Our veterinarians will determine the right frequency and amount of time needed for each session based on your pet’s needs. During a session, the animal lies down on a table or a blanket on the floor. Sedation is generally not needed unless the animal is very active. Shaving the hair is also not usually needed. The hand-held device is passed over the surface of the body on the affected area for a period of time. Most animals find the process relaxing and will often sleep during the session. There are no after effects, and your pet can return to normal activities after the session.
