New Puppy & Kitten Checklist With Greenfield Veterinary Clinic

Bringing a new pet into the home is an exciting time, but it can also be a little stressful for both of you. How will they adjust? What are their health needs? The following are some of the most important things you can do to ensure your new puppy or kitten gets the best possible start in life, from our Greenfield and Milwaukee veterinarian team:

Designated Area

When you first bring a young pet home, create a pen or designated area where they can be kept separate from the rest of the household. This will allow them to adjust, and you can also take measures to “pet-proof” this area from pet accidents.

Basic Supplies

At a minimum, you will need food and water dishes, appropriate pet food, a brush, pet bed, a leash, and a litter box and litter for cats.

Chew Toys

Be sure to have plenty of toys for your new addition so that they will be less tempted to chew on your flooring or furniture.

Spay or Neuter

Ideally, cats should be spayed or neutered between eight weeks and six months of age. Puppies should be spayed or neutered within the first year of life, but the exact time may vary depending upon the breed. Consult your Greenfield veterinarian to determine the ideal time.

Vaccines

Pet vaccines are essential to your pet’s ongoing health and well-being. Shots such as rabies and distemper as well as shots specific to puppies and kittens should be administered on an appropriate schedule. Bring your puppy or kitten in for a wellness exam to help determine the ideal vaccine schedule.

Microchipping

Raise the odds of being reunited with your puppy or kitten if they are ever lost by taking advantage of our microchipping services.
