Orthopedics FAQs
If you’re worried about the prospect of orthopedic surgery for your pet, you’re not alone. These FAQs from Greenfield Veterinary Clinic, serving pet owners in Greenfield and Milwaukee, explain more about orthopedic pet surgery and how it can benefit your pet.
What is orthopedic pet surgery?
The purpose of orthopedic surgery is to repair painful joint or bone problems that are hampering your pet’s mobility. The goal of orthopedic surgery is to relieve pain, restore bone and joint function and stability, and improve your pet’s mobility.
Why are fractures repaired surgically?
If your pet suffered a simple, clean fracture, treatment may consist of wearing a cast until the fracture has healed. Complex fractures where bones or joints are splintered or shattered into pieces require surgery to repair. Your veterinarian may use metal screws or rods to keep these bones in place while they heal.
What kinds of medical problems can be resolved through orthopedic pet surgery?
Orthopedic surgery can help resolve pain, discomfort, and mobility issues from:
- Knee problems
- Dislocated joints
- Cranial cruciate ligament injury
- Fractures due to traumatic injuries
- Hip dysplasia
- Osteoarthritis & more
If your pet suffers from joint problems or other conditions that limit his mobility, talk to our veterinarian about orthopedic pet surgery.
What can I expect from post-surgery recovery?
Your pet’s recovery time will depend on the complexity of his surgery. Some surgeries last for hours and pets are generally kept overnight for observation before being released into your care. We’ll monitor your pet carefully during this time to ensure there are no complications while he is recovering from the anesthesia.
When it comes time to take your pet home, we’ll give you full instructions for his home care. We’ll also provide pain medications to keep him comfortable during recovery. Rehab is included with your surgery to help your pet fully recover from his condition.
